Charter of Roger de Clare, earl of Hertford, confirming the sale of the manor of Langham, Ess., by Hugh Tirel to Gervase of Cornhill; Gervase had given Hugh 100 marks for his journey to Jerusalem. The earl warrants the sale to Gervase and grants that if Langham should come to him, Gervase or his heirs shall hold it of the earl by the service of one knight and shall not be impleaded respecting it elsewhere than in London or Southwark. (circa 1153?)

Sciatis me concessisse illam conuentionem et donationem firmiter quam Hugo Tirell fecit Geruasio de Cornhull de manerio suo de Lehyngeham quod est de feudo meo sicut Hugo predictus Tirell' melius et liberius et honorabilius tenuit. Sciendum enim est quod Geruasius de Cornhull' et heredes sui debent hoc predictum manerium solum et quietum et liberum tenere finabiliter. Reddendo inde per annum pro omnibus seruitiis Hugoni Tirello aut heredibus suis unam cuppam argenti de pondere trium marcarum & hec cuppa *predicta debet illis reddi Londoniis quando illuc a Geruasio uel a suis exigetur per Hugonem uel per heredes suos. Et pro hac donatione et conuentione dedit predictus Geruasius Hugoni predicto Tirello centum marcas argenti ad iter suum de Jerusalem. Et si contigerit quod heredes Hugonis Tirelli noluissent predictum pactum tenere Geruasio predicto de Cornhull' uel heredibus suis ? ego Rogerus debeo warantizare predictum pactum Geruasio uel heredibus suis. Et si contigerit quod predictum manerium incidet in manu mea predictus Geruasius et heres eius tenebit predictum manerium de me in capite finabiliter . et de heredibus meis per seruicium unius militis pro omnibus seruiciis finabiliter. The first witness is Walter fitzGilbert, the grantor's uncle, who does not figure on the Pipe Rolls of Henry II and probably died about the beginning of the reign: this supports the view, probable from the nature of the subject-matter, that the charter was executed soon after Earl Roger's succession to the earldom in 1152 or 1153. |
