The identity of the grantor is doubtful, but it is evident from his seal that he was of knightly rank, and he was probably the Gerold fitz Ralph who was one of the commissioners for the Inquest of Sheriffs in 1170 (Gerv. Cant., R. S., i. p. 216; Eyton, kin. Hen. II, p. 135). Ile was perhaps also a relative of Warin and Henry fitz Gerold, Chamberlains of the Exchequer, and the Gerold fitz Ralph fitz Gerold witness to a grant by Henry fitz Gerold to Southwark Priory for the soul of his brother Warin, who appears to have died soon after the summer of 1158 (Han . Ch. 50 A. 39; Eyton, op. cit., p. 40). The charter is of interest as relating to London, Dowgate being one of the water-gates of the city and giving its name to a ward. Tn a charter of Henry, Duke of Normandy, to the citizens of Rouen in 1150-1151, he confirmed to them the port of Dowgate (portum de Duuegate) as they had it from the time of Edward the Confessor (Chéruel, Hist. de Rouen, p. 245 ; Round, Commune, p. 246). The first witness, Hoger or Oger, here styled vicecomes ' but more often dapifer,' was sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk, Mich. 1163Easter, 1170 (Eyton, op. cit., p. 339 ; cf. Madox, Formulare, nos. lxxix, ccxci, &c.). The date of the charter therefore lies within that period. Peter the alderman was perhaps Peter fitz Walter, who held London to farm with Brichtmar de Haverhill as custodes' from June, 1174, to June, 1176 (Pipe Rolls, 20-22 Hen. II). John Bucuinte (cf. no. 76 below), with three others, held London in farm from Easter, 1169, to Mich. 1172 (ibid., 15-18 Hen. II) ; and Richard fitz Reiner was sheriff from Easter, 1187, to Mich. 11E39.
