Fragment of Great Seal, of light brown wax, on a strip cut lengthwise.
It may be remarked that Aldgate Priory, which in the grant is called Christ Church, appears here under its alternative title of the Church of the Holy Trinity. It was much favoured by Stephen and his queen, whose children Matilda and Baldwin were buried there (Cat. of Anc. Deeds, i. A. 1050, 1051 ; cf. Monasticon,
vi. p. 150). The charter of Will. de Ypres, the well-known leader of Stephen's Flemish mercenaries, which the king also confirms, was no doubt a confirmation of that of Rich. de Lucy, but his interest in the lands granted is not apparent. He was, however, a large holder of lands in Kent under grant from the king. Of the witnesses here, Fulk d'Oilli, brother of Robert d'Oilli (II), and Warner de Luisors attest various other charters of Stephen, and Gervase de Cornhill was Justiciar of London in 1141 and a notable citizen (Round, G. de Mandeville, pp. 120, 304). |
