Confirmation by John son of Edward, at the petition, and with the assent, of his mother Cecily, for the souls of his parents and all his ancestors, to the Lady Altar, to provide lights, of an annual rent of 4s. in the vill of Westminster, near Tothill, due from William the palmer, with the service he owes. The proctor of the altar should render John 6d. annually for this rent. [Temp. John]
Sciant presentes et futuri quod ego Johannes filius Edwardi, petitione et assensu Cecilie matris mee, pro anima patris et matris mee et omnium antecessorum meorum, dedi et concessi et hac presenti carta mea confirmavi Deo et altari Beate Virginis Marie Westmonasterii ad luminaria eiusdem altaris administranda singulis anu s quatuor solidorum redditum in villa Westmonasterii juxta Tothell' de Willelmo palmario, et totum servitium eiusdem Willelmi quod ad me pertinet, absque omni reclamatione mei, vel omnium heredum meorum liberum, in perpetuum. Ita quod custos predicti altaris de hiis solidis sex denariis mihi singulis annis pro omni servitio reddet. Et sciendum quod ego Johannes et heredes mei prefatum redditum prefato altari warantizabo contra omnes homines et omnes feminas. Ut autem hec donatio mea stabilis et rata permaneat earn presenti scripto et sigilli mei appositione roboravi. Seal: on tag; green, but was perhaps in office by early 1161 (Fasti III, 33). The second witn. may be his predecessor, Hugh Barre, who resigned 1157 x 1159 (ibid.). Gervase of Cornhill prob. attests as sheriff of London and Mddx. He held office in 1160-1 (Reynolds, 'Rulers of London', 335.
