grant of land without and within [ludgate] to provide light for st. mary's altar in westminster abbey 1187-9 [see also 13845, 13846]
[[[[[westch 387. Confirmation to the Lady Altar in the church of St Peter of Westminster, in pure and perpetual alms, to provide lights, by Rose the cushion-maker, widow of William Turpin of King Henry's Chamber, for her soul, that of 'her lord' [William] and of all their ancestors, of all her land outside Ludgate, with its stone houses, which William confirmed to her by charter. This land was held by Osmund carter and Ermengarde his wife, who made William their heir in the court of H II and gave him the deeds. The proctor of the Lady Altar will hold the land freely, saving the service due to the nuns of Clerkenwell, and to Roger de Friville and Ralph de Rosei and their respective heirs. Rose has offered upon the Lady Altar this present charter and those of 'her lord'. [Temp. John, ante Jan. 1214]

Date: Attestations and hand; later than 386 but within the term of office of Abbot Ralph Arundel, who granted this land to Alexander of Swerford (327). William Turpin was still active c. Michaelmas 1199 (PR 1 John, 225), and possibly as late as 1206 (PR 8 John, 120), but became a monk before 29 Sept. 1209 (PR 11 John, 152). Already, in 1204, a plaintiff named Cecily claimed as dower land in Dorset, conferred on her by William Turpin, formerly her husband, but this was contested on the grounds that the couple had never been married (Curia Regis Rolls III, 150). |
