. . . . . . . . I Robert son of Guthake of London have given and rendered myself and all my chattels and tenements and acquisitions which with the help of God I shall be able to make to God and St. Peter prince of the Apostles and the blessed Erkenwald and St. Benedict and the Abbot and brethren at Certeseye serving God so that when it shall please me I shall remain in this world (in seculo) and shall have the disposition and fruit both of my tenements and chattels so that according to my conscience and the faith which I owe as a brother to the same church I shall hold myself faithfully towards them But when it shall please me wholly to renounce this world as I shall wish they will receive me in the habit of a brother or monk without difficulty And then all my aforesaid tenements and chattels and acquisitions shall descend fully and freely to them and shall remain to the church of Certes' for ever But the tenements which I have at present and whereof I have made them the abovewritten grant are the house and land which I have in the parish of St. Nicholas of Bredestrete next to the houses which were of Maurice my brother towards the Thames and the house and land which I have in the parish of St. Martin of Lutegate opposite the houses of William de Salerne Also I have rendered quitclaim to the aforesaid Abbot and Brethren if I had any right in the houses which Maurice my brother with himself and Robert his son gave to the Church of Certes' and the Charters thereof which I had in my possession And of all these things namely I have sworn on the sacred gospels in the Chapter of Certes' that I will keep myself faithful to the church of the saine place and the Abbot and brethren there serving God That no doubt may at any time come I have strengthened the present charter with the testimony of my seal.
