Abbot Walter has given him six marks (£4).

Sciant presentes et futuri quod ego Constantinus filius Alulfi concessi et dimisi et hac mea carra confirmavi deo et ecclesie Sancte Crucis de Waltham et canonicis regularibus ibidem deo servientibus totam terrain quam tenui de monialibus de Clerchenewelle2 in parrochia Sancte Marie de Huila scilicet terrain illam que iacet inter domum lapideam quam Walterus primus abbas de Waltham in eadem parrochia edificavit et inter terrain Cecilie de Billingesgate tenendam inperpetuum et finabiliter de me et heredibus meis reddendo annuatim michi et heredibus meis unam libram piperis vet vj denarios pro omni servitio ad festum Sancti Michaelis et xvj denarios quos predicta ecclesia de Waltham reddet singulis annis pro me et heredibus meis predictis monialibus de Clerkenewelle ad duos terminos scilicet ad festum Sancti Michaelis viij denarios et ad Pascha viij denarios pro omni servitio. Date: Abbot Walter. See no.561. By the 1220s Cecilia of Billingsgate had been succeeded by John Garland (no.573 <6>), who was to be a sheriff of London in 1211-12 (S. Reynolds, 'The Rulers of London', 356). It is not known how long John Garland's family were the canons' neighbours here, but in the 16th century the Garland, formerly a brewhouse, was the chief house in Eastcheap with a garden lying behind it (A Survey of London by John Stow, ed. C.L. Kingsford, 2 vols. (afford, 1908), i, 211). |
