Rubric: Carta Willelmi de Ely, quondam regum Anglie thesaurarii, de domibus et curia predictis, cum quodam stabulo adjacente. Pd: Richardson, 'William of Ely', 89, no. VIII.
Date: Attested by the legate Pandulf, as bp.-elect of Norwich, therefore post 1 Sept. 1218 (Fasti, II, 56), and by the royal treasurer Eustace de Fauconberg, who held this office from the autumn of 1217 (Rot. Litt. Claus., I, 340b), and was elected bp. of London 25 Feb. 1221 (Fasti, I, 2). Note: Bp. Richard's grant to his kinsman William is 219. See also Richardson, 'William of Ely', 59-60. The attestations indicate that William had been reconciled with the regency government, following his defection during the civil war (Richardson, ibid. , 56-60). The land recorded in this charter was later acquired by the justiciar Hubert de Burgh, c. Nov. 1222 x April 1224 (ibid., 90, no. IX). On the location of this property (in Endiff) and its extension by William, see Rosser, 'Medieval Westminster', 21-3. |
