Confirmation by Roger de Friville, for his soul and those of his ancestors, to St Peter and the convent of Westminster, of the whole land outside Ludgate lying next to the house which formerly belonged to Osmund. The convent will render 5s. annually. Dislodgement prohibited. Roger and his wife received a gersum of 2 besants (4s.) and 2 marks (£,1 . 6s. 8d.). [Temp. John]
Date: Attestation of Roger Enganet, with those of Henry Sumer and Richard Testard (cf. Rosser, 'Medieval Westminster', 360).
Note: Prob. the convent was systematically acquiring property outside Ludgate, temp. John, since this land, granted by Reginald and Emma (390) and confirmed by Roger de Friville, adjoined that acquired from Rose, widow of William Turpin, which itself owed service to Roger (386— 7). Early in the reign of Henry III, Roger s. of Roger de Friville quitclaimed to the prior and convent 5s. annual rent which they formerly rendered for land outside Ludgate, which had been granted to them by Augustine Fitz Ailwyn and by Reginald, the baker of Bp. Richard, and by
Emma his wife (WAD, f. 475). |
