374. Notification by Serlo son of Hugh of Kent of his grant to Robert son of Edward of that land adjacent to Prestbure in London, in the parish of St Martin Outwich, to hold in inheritance, at an annual rent of 5s. Gersum of 1s. [c. 1190 x 1200]
Serlo filius Hugonis de Kent universis ad quos presens scriptum pervenerit, salutem in Domino. Noscat universitas vestra quod ego concessi Roberto filio Edwardi terram illam que jacet juxta Prestebure in London in parochia Sancti Martini de Otteswich' tenendam ipsi et heredibus suis de me et heredibus meis singulis annis pro quinque solidis pro omni servitio, scilicet: ad Pascham duos solidos et sex denarios, et duos solidos et sex denarios ad Festum Sancti Michaelis. Et ego et heredes mei ipsi Roberto et heredibus suis predictam terram contra omnes homines warantizabimus. Et pro hac concessione dedit iamdictus Robertus mihi duodecim denarios in gersummam. Ut autem hac mea concessio rata permaneat et firma, ipsam presenti scripto et sigilli mei apposicione corroborare curavi. Date: Prob. early in Serb 's career, since he is not surnamed 'the mercer', a style ascribed to him in 1207, when he was one of the farmers of London and Middlesex (PR 9 John, 49).
Note: Serlo was mayor 1216-22 (Beaven, Aldermen I, 337). The parish of St Martin Outwich included Bishopsgate and Broad Street. |
